T his article deals with all the questions that you may have about Stucco siding. In case you would like to have it installed in your homes, this is a must read for you.

Stucco siding has been used since ancient times. Still widely used throughout the world, it is one of the most common of traditional building materials. Up until the late 1800s, stucco, like mortar, was primarily lime-based, but the popularization of portland cement changed the composition of stucco, as well as mortar, to a harder material. Historically, the term “plaster” has often been interchangeable with “stucco”; the term is still favored by many, particularly when referring to the traditional lime-based coating.

Traditional stucco is a cement mixture used for siding, usually on Mission or other Spanish style homes. The cement is combined with water and inert materials such as sand and lime. Usually, wooden walls are covered with tar paper and chicken wire or galvanized metal screening. This framework is then covered with the stucco mixture. Sometimes, the cement mix is applied directly to specially prepared masonry surfaces. Stucco siding techniques were elaborated by the Italians during the Renaissance and spread through Europe. This marble dust compound could be molded into decorative shapes, polished to sheen or painted.

Most stucco siding deterioration is the result of water infiltration into the building structure, either through the roof, around chimneys, window and door openings, or excessive ground water or moisture penetrating through, or splashing up from the foundation.

The most common treatment is to whitewash the stucco siding, often annually. The lime in the whitewash offers protection and stability and helps to harden the stucco siding. Most importantly, it fills hairline cracks before they could develop into larger cracks and let in moisture. To improve water repellency, stucco buildings are also sometimes coated with paraffin, another type of wax, or other stucco-like coatings, such as oil mastics.

Stucco Siding - The Way of The Future?

Stucco siding is primarily used on residential buildings and relatively small-scale commercial structures. Original and natural stucco are hard and moisture resistant. Synthetic stucco however, though may look authentic, but may not be as strong and durable as the natural ones. For more info see http://www.homesidingreview.com/Exterior_Siding/Exterior_Wood_Siding.php on Exterior Wood Siding.

With stucco siding, you have way more flexibility in playing around with the decorative effects it offers. It has the property of blending into the environment. Therefore, whatever color your house has been painted with will complement the stucco siding. This is because at the time of manufacture of the stucco, pigments can be mixed with the stucco and one can get hundreds of shades of the same color. Therefore, the color of the stucco siding can be made to match that of your house.

There are many different ways to learn about the different house siding types, the most popular been researching on the Internet. There are many helpful websites that will be more than happy to help you in your research. An important caveat however is that when using the Internet you only rely on trusted websites. Manufacturer?s websites will have a lot of information, however they will be merrily there to sell their product as such using third-party trusted sites is probably more advisable. Alternatively, you can turn to reference books and periodicals as further sources of information in your quest for knowledge. In any event, use common sense to evaluate your sources of information.

If you are looking to add some value and glamour to your home there is nothing quite like redoing the paint or siding. Now the question is presented, which type of exterior should you choose for your home? The largest deciding factor in this choice is likely going to be what type of exterior is already on the home. If you have vinyl siding, or stucco, or simply painted wood it will usually be more cost effective to stick with what you already have. However here are a few more things to consider when this choice presents itself.

There are four basic types of siding on the market today. Vinyl siding, stucco, aluminum siding and wood. Stucco is a great exterior to deal with and is very easy to keep in pristine condition. A good power washing can bring life back to the most distraught looking stucco quite easily. What to look for to decide if your stucco needs to be redone is crumbling around the bases and edges. Stucco is also easy to paint. When dealing with vinyl siding it is not a good idea to paint this surface as vinyl can bend easily and cause the paint to crack and peel.

Usually in this situation vinyl siding will need to be replaced if it cannot be cleaned. Aluminum and steel siding is another long-lasting surface that is easy to paint and easy to maintain. Usually a fresh coat of paint will bring this metal surface back to life. Finally we come to wood siding. Paining or staining is an absolute necessity for wood as it needs to be protected from the elements, if not it will rot and decay quickly. Is the wood soft and splintered? Can you see the grain on the back side of peeling areas? If so, then replacement might be necessary. The same is true if your siding appears to be warped or buckled.

The exterior of your home is the first thing that people see so it is quite important to have it in the best condition possible. No mater what type of exterior your home has, a little time & effort can make it shine like new! Don’t be afraid to put a few dollars into it either, during the sales process it will come back in abundance.

Aluminum siding often evokes different emotions in different people. Win some people your aluminum siding they think of dated architecture, and row house clich?s. Others associate of aluminum siding with a modern aesthetic. Although neither thought is really wrong nor right, the fact is aluminum siding has been popular since the late 1950s and has never gone out of style.

Contractors and homeowners agree that aluminum siding is an excellent alternative to vinyl siding. Much like vinyl siding aluminum is easily installed, and virtually maintenance free. Aluminum siding is also highly durable, able to withstand extreme weather conditions, fire, and impact. Also, unlike other fire resistant materials of aluminum siding contains no asbestos, thus posing no health risks whatsoever.

Although aluminum siding is highly durable it does have a tendency to fade and dent over time. This is the natural wear and tear of the siding, and nothing to be concerned about. However to avoid this and maintain a pleasant aesthetic proper maintenance is important when taking care of your aluminum siding.

One of the most easy and popular maintenance suggestions for faded aluminum siding is a fresh coat of paint. A new coat of paint can completely change the look of your home. If cost is no issue hiring a contractor will ensure that the job is done professionally, quickly, and that no hassle to you. If you are looking to save a few dollars aluminum siding can easily be repainted by the tenacious homeowner. Just remember always follow your manufacturer suggestions when applying a fresh coat of paint.

Another way to tell that your aluminum siding needs a fresh coat of paint is if there is a fine powdery residue on the surface of the siding, most apparent to the touch. When deciding to repaint many experts suggest that you first coat your aluminum siding with a thin layer of primer. This primer is specifically formulated to help paint stick to your siding and ensure a long lasting coat. When taking steps to repaint your siding, it is best to purchase extra siding panels and repaint them as well. That way should an installed panel become damaged it will be possible to swap out the damaged panel for a new one while maintaining an exact color match.

Once you have freshly painted or newly installed aluminum siding the best way to care for your siding is by regularly power washing it. When power washing your aluminum siding it is important not to set the power washer at too high a level or you risk damaging the aluminum siding. One way to test whether or not you have the washer said at the right level is to briefly spray a small portion of your house that is not visible to the street. That way should you accidentally damage your siding it will not ruin the entire fa?ade. After determining the proper pressure level you may then proceed to spray down your entire home.

When properly maintained aluminum siding can last anywhere from 40 years to the lifetime of your home.

Probably the best way to give an old house a new look is with new exterior siding. Many old houses have been brought back to life and desirability by applying home vinyl siding or some sort of similar house siding material. This is a great way to enhance the look of a home, not to mention the other benefits of siding.

If you were to weigh the cost of siding a house against the increased value after siding, you would find that siding a house is a wise investment. Not only does it improve the overall appearance, but in most cases, it increases the insulation factor. Most older homes were built without any thought at all to insulation. They were heated with coal stoves, and coal was rather inexpensive. When siding a house, an insulation material is most often applied to the exterior underneath the siding. This helps tremendously in keeping out drafts, and keeping the heat in.

Aluminum and vinyl siding both come in an array of colors. Sometimes a very tasteful light color can do wonders for an older home also. Coordinating shutters make for a nice touch, as long as everything matches the color of the roof.

So far we have talked only of aluminum or vinyl siding. There are also many other options. Brick veneer siding, cedar lap siding, and cedar shingle siding are a few other options that are good choices. These tend to be a little more expensive but they make the house look a little more expensive also.

If you own an older home which needs some exterior improvement, or if you are buying an investment property to rent or resell, exterior siding is one of the greatest investments that you can make to improve the appearance of your house.

Siding a house is like you taking off your sweatshirt and jeans and putting on a suit to go out for the evening.

I recently decided that I would try my hand at installing vinyl siding. Why pay a siding contractor when I can do it myself? I went to my local home improvement center and began to select the proper house siding that I needed.

There is a wide variety of siding materials available, and the salesperson was very helpful in helping me make my selection. There is also several vinyl siding colors on the market to choose from. I had no problem in making my choice. After all I did know what I was doing.

Actually I had never installed the first plank of siding in my entire life. But I felt like I was an expert as I had watched it done a hundred times on the do-it-yourself shows on television. I have watched siding installation by just about everyone who has a home improvement show on television. In fact I have quite a bit of experience and education on how to install siding.

I dressed in my work clothes to go to the home improvement center. Blue jeans, work boots, vest, and a tape measure on your belt will help you from being intimidated by the salesman. I had no problem with the vinyl siding cost. I had investigated vinyl siding prices and was able to be convincing to the salesman about my knowledge of the subject.

I think maybe the salesman started to see through be when he got into some technical questions that I started to be uncomfortable with. I began to see that maybe I didn?t know enough about installing siding to take on this project. These questions were about things never discussed on television. Maybe I should hire a vinyl siding contractor to do the job.

After leaving the home improvement store, I went home, grabbed a beer, and hit the couch to watch Norm build some furniture.

I decided that the best way to install vinyl siding was to call a contractor, drink beer while laying in the hammock and just watch.

Although vinyl siding has many advantages over wood and does not wear as easily, sometimes it can be cracked and might have to be replaced. Extreme weather conditions, such as strong winds, can even pull vinyl siding out. As it can be seen, there are many reasons by which we might have to repair cracked vinyl siding, and knowing how to do it ourselves can save us not only money but also time when done correctly.

Before you start repairing cracked vinyl siding, you should make sure you have all the necessary tools and elements for it. You will need to have a backsaw, a “zip tool” to separate the panels, a carpenter’s square, polyurethane caulking, a new section of vinyl siding, and a utility knife. If you have all this before you start, the work will be easier and faster.

In some cases, when the cracks are small, you might be able to easily fix them without needing to remove the section and replace it with a new one. In these cases, all you will need to do is patch the crack with silicone caulking compound. But, many of the times, the cracks are too big to be properly fixed with that procedure and you will have to replace the section.

In order to replace a section of vinyl siding, you will have to start by unfastening the panel with the zip tool. Start unfastening the section placed right where the vinyl siding is damaged and lift it. Once that panel is lifted, you will be able to remove the nails that hold the section you need to replace. Hold the section in place while removing the nails, and trace straight lines at its ends with the help of a square.

With the help of a utility knife, cut the panel following the lines you traced and remove the damaged section. Next measure that section and cut a 2 inches longer piece from the new section. This new section should overlap about 1 inch on each end. After this, you will be ready to fit it into place and nail it. Once you are sure it is firmly nailed, you should make the lifted upper panel go down again with the help of the zip tool.

The buzz word in today?s real estate market and on HGTV is ?curb appeal? Your home has to have curb appeal. Curb appeal is the first and foremost important thing when selling a house. The outside of the house will be the first thing that your potential buyers will see. This first impression is where the money is.

So how important is home improvement siding? This depends on the situation. Does the increase in your home value out weigh the cost of new siding?

First of all you need to check your options. Can you repair your existing aluminum siding? Repairing aluminum siding usually requires the services of a contractor. Obtain an estimate from a contractor who does house siding repair and hold it for later use when it comes to comparing your options.

If you are to replace the siding, what type of siding would you choose? If you choose to replace the existing siding with vinyl siding, then obtain a vinyl siding cost estimate from a contractor. The same goes for imitation brick siding or cedar look siding.

Your next step should be to consult with a real estate agent. These are professional people who know what it takes to sell a house. Sit down with them and show them your options. The real estate agent can give you their professional opinion as to what your house is worth now. Given siding options, they can tell you what your home would be worth with each particular siding.

Subtract the value of your house now plus the cost of the new siding, from the potential value of the house after siding, to see if you have made an increase in value. You can then proceed to make a choice to either leave things as they are, or choose a particular siding and call the contractor.

A real estate agent can also give you a valuable opinion as to which siding would look best on your home. One of course that blends to the neighborhood.

Let?s say that you have no intention of selling your home, but you just want to improve the appearance. The same advice holds true. Make sure that the home improvements increase the value of your house as you never know when you may be ready to put your home on the market.

House siding is a very important decision to be made when building a new home or reconditioning an older home. Very careful consideration should be taken when choosing the right siding for your home. There are many types of siding available to the home owner today. Products range from vinyl siding, aluminum siding, cedar siding, stone siding, log siding, brick siding, and stucco siding just to mention a few. Many factors need to be considered before choosing the right siding for your home.

The style of your home is of course a major factor on choosing a proper siding. You certainly would not want to apply log siding to a Victorian home, or cedar siding to a Mediterranean style home. Do some research on your style of home to see what type of siding best suits your needs.

Hopefully your home is compatible with other homes in the neighborhood. So you will want to choose a siding that blends with the rest of the homes in your neighborhood. You will find that making friends will be easier if you are not a distraction or a detriment to property values. In other words, a pink and purple house may not be welcomed in some neighborhoods. Try to enhance the entire neighborhood with your choice of siding.

Now personal preference should also be considered, but that should have started with choosing the type of home that you purchased in the first place. Another huge factor is one?s budget. Perhaps brick siding is not within your budget, but vinyl siding is. Then choose a vinyl siding that will blend well with the neighboring homes. If you so wish to attempt the project yourself to save installation expenses, there are books available on how to install vinyl siding. If that is not an option, then a reputable siding contractor is the way to go.

Many historical neighborhoods have zoning committees that have to approve any home building or home renovations. If your home is in such a neighborhood, then you should consult with the committee first before proceeding with any selection of your own.

If there are no zoning regulations in the neighborhood regulating the color of your home or the type of siding allowed, it still may be a good idea to consult with your neighbors. This will not only be a good way to make friends, but they may have some very good ideas that you never considered. Just remember, you are going to be a part of the neighborhood and are going to be living with these people.

Aluminum siding is widely used to protect houses and for adding value to it. It is made of different materials most common being aluminum and vinyl. These materials are used to provide durability and for decoration purposes. They are sold in panels of 12 x 36 or 12 x 48 and can last for up to fourty years.

Aluminum Siding is very easy to install at home, but it may take a while, if you do not know the procedure. Installing it on your own can save a lot of money and you have the choice of how you would like it and where. The sliding doors and aluminum siding, comes in an entire kit, making it easy for you to install. However, while installing aluminum siding, you need to keep a few important and basic tools handy.

1. Chalk line 2. Screwdriver set 3. Tin snips 4. Hammer 5. Level 6. A utility knife - it is used to cut, score, and trim the aluminum siding

It is necessary to ensure that your backings are such that the aluminum sidings can lie flat. The 3/8″ foam board insulation is the commonly used backing for an aluminum siding, which helps the sidings to lie flat.

The fitting should not be too tight. You should be able to nail the panel comfortably. Keep your nails and fasteners in the middle of the slot. Do not drive the nail too tightly along side the siding nail hem. Remember to have a minimum clearance space of 1/4″.

You should carefully go through the directions because your success and the value of your home depend on the degree of professionalism you put in the job. If you think you cannot give the time the job demands, you can hire a professional contractor to do the project. It is better not to rework the corner posts as they are used to cover the ends of the plate. Use a j-channel to trim the ends of the siding. To keep the sidings closed the vertical seams must overlap.

An aluminum awning is a useful addition to your house. It provides a nice decor to your home and can raise the real estate value of your residence. It will also save you quite a bit in heating and cooling bills. A little shade over your windows will stop the sunshine and heat from streaming into your home and heating the house. This will save you money in cooling bills on those hot summer days.

Install an aluminum awning over your deck and keep your deck life cool and bracing in the hot summer days. Aluminum is blessed with natural light reflecting capacity, which helps to keep both your home and deck cooler. Apart from your enjoyment, an aluminum awning will protect the deck from strong sunbeams thus increasing its longevity, especially of a natural wooden deck.

Thus aluminum siding is the best and most cost effective way of keeping your home beautiful and at the same time cool. If you are thinking of selling your house, these two ways mentioned above can be very effective in increasing the resale value of your house.

For the last 20 years vinyl siding has been the exterior finish of choice, ahead of wood, aluminum, and steel. Besides being virtually maintenance free, it is also chosen for its colors, style choices and durability.

Many of the myths about vinyl siding stem from its early years when cracking, fading, and buckling were part of its characteristics. Technology quickly caught up with these faults and made it a more viable product for an exterior finish.

Another false read that people may have gotten about vinyl siding is seeing a poor installation on a new or re-sided house. Installers not knowledgeable or not following the manufacturers recommended installation instructions could produce a poor job making one think its typical of all vinyl siding jobs.

One of the most common mistakes made when installing vinyl siding is not allowing room for expansion. During warm weather a 12 foot panel can expand up to 1/2 inch. Because of this, the siding is installed 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch short of J-channels and corners depending on the temperature its installed in.

Another no-no is nailing the siding tight to the wall. Vinyl siding has a slotted nailing strip along its top edge. When nailing the siding on, one must drive the nails as close to the center of the slot as possible and leave the nail heads no closer than an 1/8 inch away from the strip. This will allow the siding panel to slide left to right and expand without buckling.

Another complaint is not being able to match and replace a damaged panel. If one installs or has installed a reputable brand name vinyl siding chances are it will be available should the need arise. After installation its a good idea to keep a small piece of the siding and to write the color and brand name on the back with permanent marker.

Whether installing or having vinyl siding installed, do your homework. Research some of the different makers of vinyl siding and their products they have available. If you are installing the siding yourself, follow the manufacturers installation instructions. If you hire a contractor to do the job, ask for addresses of jobs he’s done so you can see his work.
